L'Unione Sarda, Sardinia's first daily newspaper, was founded in 1889 on the initiative of a Liberal political group.
In the post-War years it consolidated its ties with the territory through its coverage of local news items relating to the major judicial stories of the 50's and 60's.
In the 80's and 90's the paper introduced new electronic technologies for production and printing, and constructed a cutting-edge printing centre.
The l'Unione Sarda printing centre is still used to print copies of some of the biggest dailies for distribution in Sardinia: Corriere della Sera, La Gazzetta dello Sport, La Stampa, Il Giornale, Il sole 24 Ore, Il Messaggero, Il Corriere dello Sport.
A new publishing strategy was outlined in 2000 with the aim of strengthening the paper's presence across Sardinia with 4 editions: Cagliari, Province of Cagliari, Oristano, Nuoro/Sassari.
As well as in-depth coverage of local news, also introduced were:
- Pages of useful information on free time and for those travelling
- Pages with information on flight schedules, train, bus and ferry timetables
- Different inserts for every day of the week focusing on: sport, business and jobs, entertainment/fashion/gossip, weekend, reading.
L'Unione Sarda was the first Italian daily newspaper to go online: www.unionesarda.it.
The paper is available online as soon as the edition is closed and before the print version becomes available.
